Hola LT runners!

I'm more than thrilled to let you know of a very special guest speaker that the Long Trail Running Club will be hosting on Thursday, February 18th at the Seventh Generation offices in Burlington!

Bernd Heinrich is a professor emeritus in the biology department at the University of Vermont and is the author of a number of books about nature writing, behavior, biology, ecology, and evolution. But more importantly to us as a running group, Bernd was a top ultra runner in the 1980's and 90's. (see more info below)

Bernd will be talking about when and why he started running, his research on ultra running which is in his book Why We Run, and his thoughts on training. At 5:30 we'll have some snacks and at 6:00pm we'll start the discussion.

The talk will be followed by our first official SOCIAL GATHERING of 2010! We'll choose a place to go be social and drink and eat, so if any of you out there have been hesitant to come run with us because you know no one in the LTRC, now's your chance to come see that none of us are very scary!

PLEASE RSVP to Bernd's talk as we need to have an approximate # of folks coming!

We hope you'll all join for few beers after wards!!!!

Happy February!

Warm wishes,
Mary McClements

Here's a bit of info on Bernd:
In 1981, he set an absolute American Record (i.e., the best of either road or track venues; this one was a road race in Chicago) of 6:38:20 for 100 km (62.137 miles). Two years later, he set an absolute American Record for the 24 Hour Run of 156 miles, 1388 yards in a track race in Maine. In 1984, he set an absolute American 100 mile record of 12:27:01, again in a track race. One year later, he set the American track record of 7:00:12 for 100 km. In so doing, he became the only American man to hold both the road and track versions of the American Record for the same event. His 12:27:01 for 100 miles and 7:00:12 for 100 km still remained, at the end of 2007, the official American Track records. At the end of 2007, Heinrich was inducted into the American Ultrarunning Association's Hall of Fame.

What an awesome group of people last night. Thank you, thank you for being such nice guests at Seventh Generation and great participants in the discussion with Bernd. I believe Bernd had as much fun as we did.

    Cheers to you!

I can't remember the name of the person in Plainfield who really wanted to attend Bernd's talk. I can't make it this evening. I'm hoping you will get this message and be able to take my place!

Inspiration comes in many forms. Tonight, it came from a 70 year old legend sharing his experience and perspective with a group of eager listeners. With a twinkle in his eye, Bernd passed on a lifetime of running prowess and a wealth of positive, competitive spirit!

Bernd was great. Lots to new people to meet. Beer and some laughs afterward - could not have asked for a better evening.
    •  Really wonderful to meet some new folks from LTRC and Bernd is SO the man!!!!
    •  It was a very nice, casual gathering that was both interesting and motivating. Who else could make 26.2 seem like a short run?
